the sherd in the picture is recently one of the most talked about items in the Safi Lab these days. the sherd was found in the 2002 excavation season, amongst the finds of a large Late Bronze Age II (13th Century BCE) building.
Today (Feb., 2, 2006) I visited Tell es-Safi with Yaakov Shkolnik, editor of Eretz Magazine. In the upcoming Hebrew edition there will be an article on the site, and in the near future, the English version will appear as well.
The site was completely green, covered by flowers and other winter plants. All told the site was in good shape, save for many sandbags that had been stolen from the balks since the summer.
When we left the tell, we bumped into a group of about 10 elderly religious women from Bnei Berak (an ultra-orthodox city, not far from Bar-Ilan University), who had decided to visit the site. They were wandering around without really knowing where to go, and they were lucky to bump into us.
Along the way there were many birds, animals, and as usual, the fantastic view from the top of the tell of the surrounding regions.
