Jeff talks to staff about Area F

Today, in the lab meeting (even though it was not in the lab, since we are still not recovered from the deluvial event a couple of weeks ago …), Dr. Jeff Chadwick spoke about his preliminary analysis of the stratigraphy of Area F, the area which he supervises. He discussed with us the stratigraphy and related finds, and suggested several very interesting preliminary interpretations.

Among other points, he discussed the possibility that we have two 8th century BCE levels in the area, and below that a 9th century level (which corresponds to the 9th century [Hazael] destruction in Area A). In addition, he believes that in one of the squares there may be evidence for various food preparation activities, including possible cooking/baking activities.

It was clear from the presentation that there is much more to be done in Area F, hopefully, we will be seeing some important results this coming season.

Needless to say, we all discussed the pros and cons of the suggestions and we had a very lively and enlightening discussion. It was really nice having Jeff in the meeting, since, usually, he is on the other side of the Planet! (actually in Farr West!)

Jeff, as always, presented a very astute analysis of the stratigraphy, even if some of the points were not agreed upon by all!

Onwards and upwards!

I would consider the possibility that the upper stratum may be 7th century and not 8th century, a point Jeff hinted at. although not much material dating to this period was collected on the survey, three stamped handles dating to the 7th century, meaning that some human activity did occur on the tell in that period.

“…three stamped handles dating to the 7th century”??? Rosettes, I presume? Can I please get a better description? Thanks in advance!

P.S. Prof. Maeir, please consider turning on some form of comment-moderation–your blog is filling up with garbage much like an ancient tel … oh, now I get it …

Grena, thanks for the note. deleted the recent spam comments. actually the spam filter catches some 20+ junk comments a day, just that a few slipped threw

George,
The stamped handles are the “Rosette” handles. These handles have been mentioned in J. Cahill’s article on the handles in IEJ (several years ago).
One or two were found by us in the survey, and one or two by Moshe Yisrael (many years ago).
