Yesterday and today, a very interesting conference on scientific issues relating to archaeological conservation was held at Bar-Ilan University. The conference, which was organized by Dr. Elisabetta Boaretta (Bar-Ilan and Weizmann Institute) and Prof. Lucio Calcagnile of the University of Salento, dealt with various issues relating to the science of archaeological conservation.
For the program, see here and here programm-italian-israeli-workshop.pdf
Yesteday evening, in the opening ceremony (opening-italian-israeli-workshop.pdf), I gave a short lecture on ”a field archaeologists’ perspective on conservation” in which I tried to relate to the “ups and downs” and inter-relations between the archaeologist and the conservator.
Altogether, the meeting was extremely interesting and demonstrated the fascinating developments going on in the field of scientifically based archaeological conservation, and the enormous potential that this field has (and further Italian-Israeli collaboration in this and related fields).

As an archaeologist who has had the opportunity to have conservators and others from the Weizman Institute work with us in the field, I know that there are occasionally “ups and downs” which the different professionals have to learn how to negotiate and overcome. On the whole, however, I was most pleased at being able to work with these colleagues in the field in 2007. In particular, I became delighted to get to know Elisabetta, and and grateful she was able to work with us. I’d invite her into my field anytime, anywhere. Please pass on my best wishes!
