I’ve been informed that the fantastic two-horned stone altar that we found this last summer in Area D at Tell es-Safi/Gath (see, for example, here and here) has been chosen as the “Find of the Year” for the “Dig Issue” of BAR, which should be appearing in late 2011/early 2012.
Fame and fortune to us all!!!
And just so that you remember what they are talking about, here is a nice picture:

It’s the find of the decade!

Let’s not go overboard…
A nice cache of tablets with writing, similar to the one found at Aphek (which based on petrography may come from Gath), in a well-defined Iron I context would classify as the find of a decade. And if one or two (or 5-6) of them were bilingual (Semitic and whatever the Aphek language is) – that would definitely classify as the find of the Jubilee…
:-)
well, I mentioned the Aphek tablet in my talk, but I’d rather have some readable architecture I can interpret than a bunch of unreadable inscriptions.

That’s why I want some bilingual ones in the cache!
I’ll speak to Brent about it
Howdy,
Great job at Gath! After looking at this shot it looks like there might be some damaged portions near the “back” corners of the altar. Could we still be looking at a 4-horned beast or is there enough evidence on the piece to confirm only 2 horns?
Peace,
Thomas
Thomas,
From what we can see on the altar, it appears that there were not originally 4 horns.
Thanks for your inquiry.
