The new BAR – Hershel Shanks thinks I run a peep show! :-)

Yesterday, I received the latest issue of Biblical Archaeology Review, in which Hershel Shanks, in the opening editorial, accuses me of acting improperly, since I did not provide a line drawing of the "Goliath Inscription" for publication in BAR. He then goes on to talk about how archaeologists are horrible creatures, hiding their finds from the public.

Clearly, I don't agree with him (not for the first time …)!

Have no fear – a response will soon appear! AND, I will have fun writing it! :-)

  1. Was this the same editor of the same magazine that published a clear, 2x color photo of the “Gath Inscription” on p. 16 of the previous (Mar/Apr) issue? The artifact was widely published on the Internet concurrent with the Annual Meeting! What difference would a drawing have made in BAR’s Jan/Feb issue when in decades past it took months–if not years–for artifacts to be published?

Was this the same editor of the same magazine that misrepresented the same artifact on p. 12 of the current issue (“a pottery sherd bearing the name ‘Goliath'”) months after the editor heard firsthand from the excavator that the artifact did ***NOT*** bear the name of Goliath?

Well Aren, now you are Shanks shit list – you are in great company! Some are maybe even most of the top professional archaeologist working in biblical materials are on his shit list.
This dude Shanks has the nerve – I haven’t seen this BAR yet – canceled my subscription log ago when I saw what Shanks is doing to the real archaeology of Israel. For once he had the opportunity to publish something Kosher and it seems that it doesn’t taste good to him without the wrapper!
Skip Shanks and BAR in the future and try and publish in the major leagues – leave BAR for Hanan Eshel, Moussaieff, Deutsch and Golan

As a man once said: “It does not matter what they write about you, as long as they spell your name correctly” …
