Two project related publications

Just a “heads-up” on two project related publications that have just appeared, which may be of interest to anyone dealing with various aspects relating to the site and other related issues:

1) D. Ben-Shlomo, J. Uziel, and A.M. Maeir. 2009. Pottery Production at Tell es-Safi/Gath: A Longue Durée Perspective. Journal of Archaeological Science online (DOI information: 10.1016/j.jas.2009.06.011). In this article, a multi-period study view of the technology of pottery production at Tell es-Safi/Gath is presented, covering finds from the Early Bronze Age through to the end of the Iron Age. The study attempts to define aspects in the production technology, choices of materials used in the production, production methods, etc. This article has appeared on line and should appear in print in the near future.

2) Shai, I. 2009. Understanding the Philistine Migration: City Names and Their Implications. BASOR 354: 15-27. This is an article by Itzik Shai, who is a long-time senior member of the Safi project, in which he very nicely shows that the fact that the names of the 5 Philistine cities (Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gaza, Ekron and Gath) all have Canaanite names and not non-Semitic names, is an important aspect for understanding the process of colonization and settlement of Philistia by the Philistines in the early Iron Age.
