Itzik Shai and Joe Uziel, long time core team members of the Tell es-Safi/Project, have just published a very nice article, discussing literacy and illiteracy in the Southern Levant during the Bronze Age. They attempt to understand and explain the role of writing in this region during the various stages of the Bronze Age, both in comparison to neighboring regions, and in relationship to the later Iron Age. Very interesting!
