Today, I picked up a copy at the Israel Exploration Society of the just appeared excavation report on the Kuntillet ‘Ajrud excavations, edited by Z. Meshel. Although the report has been quite late in appearing (the excavations were conducted in 1975-1976…), it is chock-full of extremely interesting chapters on the site and the finds. Of particular importance is the extended chapter on the fascinating inscriptions from the site by S. Ahituv and E. Eshel, but the other chapters are very important and interesting as well.
As I fully agree with the report that the materials from the site date to the very late 9th cent or early 8th cent BCE, it contains important parallels for the finds from mid/late 9th cent. destruction level at Tell es-Safi/Gath.

The Kuntilet Ajrud materials were dated based on several things: 1) Comparative pottery typology; 2) Comparative paleographic typology; 3) Carbon 14 dating
Most date this to the late 9th/early 8th, while a minority opinion (Singer-Avitz) dates it to the 2nd half of the 8th cent. BCE.
