The David and Goliath Story and Biblical Redaction

See here a short and very nice piece by Deane Galbraith on how the versions of the David and Goliath narrative can be used to explain some of the complexities of biblical redaction.

Check it out.

      Deane,
My pleasure – and thanks for pointing out your idea regarding “rpa”. Without checking on this – I seem to recall that some have suggested some connection between the “rap/bi” in Hammurabi and rapaum? Or am I hallucinating? :-)

You’re right. Marvin Pope, for one, associates the Ugaritic RPA with the ra-pi in the personal name Hammurapi. Yet he interprets the RPA root as referring to healthiness, fertility, and so the meaning “Hammurapi” as “extensive family”.
