Great answer to bogus archaeology…

A great collection of book reviews by REAL archaeologists trashing pseudo archaeology book has appeared in American Antiquity (one of the reviewers is Eric Cline!).

As most archaeologists are familiar with people who contact them and have alternative explanations to various aspects of antiquity (I’ve been having such an email exchange with someone in the last few days) – it is nice to see a serious attempt to answer some of these baseless, but very popular, theories.

The reviews can be downloaded for free (here).

Enjoy!

P.S. I’m sorry to inform you all that aliens did not build the Sphinx, the Inca are not Phoenicians, and Atlantis has not been found…

  1. Wonderful article and while it is a good outline of an increasingly worrisome problem it does not suggest a solution. How is trend of ancient aliens different from the belief in Joshua tumbling the walls of Jericho or Moses crossing the Red Sea? Miraculous pseudo-explanations always seem to have been preferred for their simplicity over real explanations which require following a chain of reasoning and accepting some level of uncertainty.

One solution is to provided better accessibility to quality research articles instead of hiding them within university libraries. The public gets most of their information online these days and this allows for the fast propagation of emotionally compelling information even if false. Educated people people who are skeptical of these claims do have easy access access to the information needed to refute the pseudo-science.

Yes. It was a bit ironic, actually, that when this special book review section came out, it was closed-access. The SAA, to their credit, did come around and make it open-access, but it does highlight the general problem. . .
