אנו, החתומים מטה, ארכיאולוגים והיסטוריונים ממוסדות מחקר ברחבי ישראל, בעלי מגוון דעות ותפיסות עולם, יוצאים בגילוי דעת:
מעת לעת, ואפילו בימים אלה ממש, מתפרסמות תגליות וממצאים ארכיאולוגיים (שמוצגים לא פעם כמהפכנים ומשנים את ההבנה אודות תולדות ארץ ישראל) כאשר הפרסום הוא בעיתונות הפופולארית ובמדיה החברתית, ללא תמונות ואיורים באיכות, ולפני שתגליות וממצאים אלה פורסמו בבמות מדעיות ועברו ביקורת של עמיתים לפני הפרסום, ובמקרים רבים בלי שהתגליות מפורסמות כלל בבמות מדעיות גם פרק זמן ארוך לאחר פרסום ההודעות לתקשורת.
כידוע לכל מי שעוסק במדע ומחקר, אבן יסוד של המחקר היא שתגליות ותוצאות מחקריות חייבות לעבור תהליך של ביקורת של עמיתים למקצוע לפני הפרסום, על מנת לבדוק את איכותו, להציע שיפורים והערות, ואף, במקרים מסוימים, לדחות פרשנות מדעית. ללא הליך זה, המחקר מתנהל ללא ביקורת, ומדענים וחוקרים אחרים (ובמקרה זה, ארכיאולוגים והיסטוריונים) אינם יכולים לבחון את הטענות, ואף לחלוק עליהן.
אנו מבקשים לחזור ולהדגיש שכמו בכל תחום מדעי, עד שממצאים, תגליות וחידושים לא מתפרסמים בעיתונות מדעית, ועוברים ביקורת של ממש, כל טיעון ייחשב כלא מבוסס, שאף לא ראוי לפרסום בבמות פופולאריות.
Public Statement
We, the undersigned, archaeologists and historians from research institutions throughout Israel, of various backgrounds and worldviews, wish to make a public statement.
Occasionally, and up until recent days, archaeological finds and discoveries (that are at times presented as revolutionary and game changers in the history of the Land of Israel) have been published in the popular press and on social media, prior to peer review, and to the full presentation, with high quality illustrations, of these finds in scientific publications, even long after the initial public notification.
As is clear to anyone dealing with science and research, one of the foundations of all research and discovery is that results must go through a process of peer review prior to publication, to check for quality, suggest improvements and comments, and in some cases, reject a suggestion. Without this process, research is conducted without proper checks and balances. In addition, research colleagues (in this case archaeologists and historians) cannot properly ascertain, and if need be disagree, with these claims.
We cannot but stress that until the publication of finds or research results in a scientific and peer-reviewed publication, any claim made should be related to as unfounded, and is also unworthy of publication in the popular press.

The reaction of Galil is beyond frustrating for those of us who are members of the Jewish traditional faith group. False claims only cause desecration of G-d’s name. If the finding is accurately described, I can only imagine he thinks he’ll make more money on book sales if he doesn’t allow peer review until after publication. It’s nto the right field to go into just for pure greed.
