Jeff on Goliath, Cubits and Giants

Jeff Chadwick (aka Achish Melekh Gath), field director of Area D East and long time core-team member of the Safi team, has for quite a while argued that the cubit used in the Land of Israel during the Bronze and Iron Age is a cubit of 54 cm (and hopefully, he will be publishing an article on this in the near future). In the annual meeting of ASOR, which was held over the last week online, Jeff presented a paper in which he suggested that the height of Goliath as depicted in the biblical text, 4 cubits and a span, is perhaps a reflection of the width of the city walls of Gath. Since the wall were 2.38 in width, that comes out to exactly 4 cubits and a span if one measures this according to the 54 cm cubit!

Check out a popular article in Science News that just appeared which explains this, based on an interview with Jeff.

Here’s Jeff standing on the walls, right next to the gate, in Area D East.
